The value of surface electromyography in the rehabilitation of oropharyngeal dysphagia. Dysphagia management is based upon a range of compensatory techniques or rehabilitation manoeuvres for changing swallowing pathophysiology through muscle training. These methods are only useful if both the speech pathologist and the patient are able to learn and teach them. Since there is little awareness of physiological changes during swallowing, the speech pathologist may experience difficulties in coaching the patient. SEMG can record and quantitatively evaluate muscle activity during swallowing. SEMG biofeedback presents auditory and visual signals to support the patient in practicing swallowing exercises. As an adjunct to standard therapy, sEMG can help us to reach more patients with oropharyngeal swallowing disorders.
