Introduction: The superior attachment of the uncinate process (UP) is also highly variable. It was argued that the presence and pneumatization degree of the agger nasi (AN) cell will affect the superior attachment of the UP.
Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the superior attachment types of the UP and the volume of the AN cell. Subjects and methods: Subjects who were candidates for septoplasty were enrolled for a one-year period. The computed tomography (CT) scans were evaluated for the superior attachment type of the UP, together with the presence and pneumatization of the AN cell for each side.
Results: In total, 90 subjects (180 sides) were evaluated. The UP was found on all 180 sides and AN cells were found in 164 (91.2%) of the 180 sides. The mean AN cell volume was 0.29±0.19 cm3 . The AN volume showed no significant differences according to age, side and sex (p = 0.844, p = 0.906 and p = 0.971, respectively). The most common types of the UP were insertions of the UP to the lamina papyracea in males (51.5%) and females (64.0%). No significant differences were observed between the pneumatization of the AN cell and the superior attachment types of the UP (p = 0.243). The prevalence of the AN cell was significantly lower when the UP attaches the skull base.
Conclusion: The pneumatization of the AN cell and the superior attachment of the UP are important anatomical structures for the anatomy of the frontal recess. As far as we are aware, this is the first study that evaluated AN cell volume according to the UP superior attachment type. In our study, AN cell volume was not affected by the UP attachment; however, the prevalence of AN cells was significantly lower when the UP attaches the skull base.
