Objective: To explore minimally invasive treatment for benign lesions arising from the aryepiglottic fold.
Methodology: The management of 29 cases with lesions arising from the aryepiglottic fold was studied retrospectively. All patients underwent detailed examinations of the pharynx and larynx by video fibrolaryngoscopy, and all underwent minimally invasive surgery using a transoral approach assisted by a multi-function, micro-support laryngoscope. The minimally invasive equipment included an ultrasonic scalpel, CO2 laser, and low-temperature plasma.
Results: Pathological results showed 12 cases with cysts, 10 with hemangiomas, six with polyps, and one case with a granular cell tumor. En bloc removal of the lesions was achieved under a multi-function micro-support laryngoscope. No patient had a recurrent lesion during two years of follow-up.
Conclusions: Lesions arising from the aryepiglottic fold are rare, but can be identified by video fibrolaryngoscopy. If the appropriate minimally invasive approaches are selected, en bloc resection of these benign lesions can be achieved transorally.
