Laryngeal liposarcoma misdiagnosed as an aggressive epiglottic cyst. Objectives: A liposarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor originating from adipose tissue. A primary liposarcoma in the larynx is very rare. We present a case of laryngeal liposarcoma misdiagnosed as an epiglottic cyst.
Case report: A 15-year old male presented with a huge vallecula mass accompanied by progressively worsening respiratory distress, sleep apnea, and hoarseness. Initially, the mass was misdiagnosed as a huge epiglottic cyst because it was well-encapsulated when viewed with a fiberoptic laryngoscope. We excised the mass via suspension laryngoscopy. Histopathologically, the lesion was a myxoid liposarcoma. The mass was examined further using imaging techniques and the patient underwent revision surgery to eliminate the remaining tumor.
Conclusions: A rare liposarcoma in the larynx could be misdiagnosed as commonly seen cystic disease because it is morphological similarity when viewed endoscopically. Careful inspection of the radiologic findings can improve the diagnosis and ensure proper treatment of the liposarcoma.
