Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the audiological outcomes of bilateral stapes surgery and to determine the safety of second ear surgery.
Methods: Fifty-seven patients who were operated on in both ears were retrospectively analyzed. Socially serviceable hearing, air-bone gap, airbone gap gain, functional, and symmetrical hearing successes were evaluated.
Results: In the initial and later surgery, functional successes were 84% and 88%, respectively. The patients who had functional success after the first ear surgery had higher functional success after the second surgery than those who did not. Symmetrical hearing success rate was 33% in the first surgery and 63% in the second surgery.
Conclusion: The other ear surgery outcomes in patients who had functional success at initial surgery are as good as the first operation and contralateral surgery can be applied safely.
