Abstract
Endoscopic ear surgery is an innovative field of otologic surgery that has developed rapidly in the 21st century. The use of an endoscope allows the surgeon to improve the visualization around the corners, with a larger field of view, through a narrow portal. Endoscopic ear surgery widens the indications for minimal invasive surgery and has its pearls and pitfalls.
There is no reason to believe that complications for endoscopic ear surgery are higher than for microscope-based approaches. This article serves as a primer for the otologist and otology resident embarking on endoscopic ear surgery and discusses important points such as learning process, learning curves, and ergonomics. It provides some tips and tricks from the literature and from the author to avoid some drawbacks and to gain proficiency with this technique.
